Vera Gubnitskaia
Born in former Soviet Union, Vera Gubnitskaia first learned how to read and then how to read between the lines. This was inevitable in a society where honest opinions and unorthodox views were discouraged (at best) or punished. You had to be able to read what was not spelled out, hear what was not explicitly said, and see what was not clearly pictured. Ironically, these adverse conditions allowed her to develop a style that gives depth to her art, asking you to look beyond the immediate visual. Each of Gubnitskaia’s paintings, drawings, or sculptures has a story, and then a story behind a story, like endless reflections in a mirror. Each piece immerses you in the artist’s interpretations of fantasy, poetry, literature, music, and past and present experiences.
